A bruise is a purplish mark on the skin due to the blood leaking from blood vessels under the surface of the skin, usually due to impact against the area.

Example: I accidentally knocked my head against the wall, and got a bruise on the forehead.

When you bruise someone, you hit him with something that causes him to get a bruise.
