A sacrifice is something that a person gives up in order to help him or somebody else. A person who makes a sacrifice for a friend will do something that he might not want to do in order to help his friend.

A sacrifice is an offer given as a gift to a god.

Example: People in the Old Testament offered a lamb as a sacrifice to God for forgiveness.

If you sacrifice someone or something, you give them up for other things.
