When someone searches for something, they don't know where it is and they look in many places to try to discover where it is.

Example: I searched the whole room but I don't know where the book is.

An attempt to find something.

Example: The search for the stolen jewelry was unsuccessful.

The act of searching, as in computers etc..

Example: Search engines have made using the internet easier.
