A state is a condition or a situation.

Example: I am worried about her. She is in a constant state of depression.

Any sovereign nation (nation that rules itself) is a state.

Example: The United States is a country with many sovereign nations united with each other.

To state something is to say it as a fact.

Example: He stated that he hasn't slept in 2 days.

To state something is to let it be known.

Example: Please state your name and place of business.
